ABOUT US

Our Mission

The New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) is the principal organization of professional geologists responsible for the advancement of the competent and ethical practice of geology in New York State. NYSCPG’s primary missions, on behalf of its members, are to strengthen and advance the application of geological sciences as a profession by providing leadership, advocacy, and education to promote the protection of public health, safety, and welfare, and the balanced protection of the environment.

The following is a compiled summary of actions items and/or objectives/initiatives.

The most important issues facing the NYSCPG are:

  • How to help the membership and other fellow PGs and Geologists-in-Training (Intern Geologists) understand the importance of protecting the profession; and
  • How to revitalize the NYSCPG to better serve its constituents and attract new members/sponsors.

To do so, we plan to implement the following:

  • Continue to update our fact sheets and FAQs;
  • Continue to revisit and update our by-laws;
  • Review and approve providers of continuing education course and activities for professional development hours (PDHs);
  • Sponsor continuing education courses for PDHs;
  • Solicit more committee members from the membership;
  • Continue to monitor proposed legislation that may impact the profession and act as required;
  • Continue to each out to college and university students (via webinars and/or in-person meetings) to educate students on the importance of and opportunities arising from licensure;
  • Continue to host/participate in more professional seminars; and,
  • Maintain a database of New York State-Licensed Intern Geologists and Professional Geologists.

This is an ambitious list of goals/initiatives, but some of these initiatives are already underway or have been completed! However, because all individuals on the NYSCPG Board of Directors (BOD) have full-time jobs, they cannot do this alone. We need your help and we need your input and support. If you have any suggestions, comments, praises, criticisms, questions, or you just want to lend a hand, please contact the Board of Directors.
